How MERP Works

Overview

The Medicaid Recovery Estate Program may seek repayment for certain Medicaid benefits after a Medicaid recipient has passed away. The process depends on the estate, available information, and whether an exclusion, exemption, hardship, or deferral may apply.

When a notice is sent

MERP may send a notice when it receives information about an estate or potential recovery matter. The notice may ask for estate details, documents, or a response from an estate representative, family member, attorney, or organization.

• Read the notice carefully and review the response deadline.
• Gather any documents requested in the notice.
• Use the portal to upload documents or send a message securely.

How to respond

You can use the portal to provide documents, check your case status, and communicate with MERP staff. If you are not sure which option to use, contact MERP for assistance before the response deadline.

Review and decision

After you submit your response or documents, MERP reviews the information along with any supporting documentation. Depending on your case, we may verify information, request additional documents, or determine that we have everything needed to make a decision.

You can sign in to your account at any time to check your case status, view messages, and see whether any additional action is required.

After a decision

Once the review is complete, MERP will notify you of the outcome. If additional information is needed, you'll receive instructions explaining what to provide and any applicable deadlines.

If no further action is required, your case will continue through the Medicaid Estate Recovery process. You can continue using the portal to:

• View your current case status.
• Read secure messages from MERP.
• Upload additional documents if requested.
• Respond to future requests.
• View or download available correspondence.
